Legendary trainer Freddie Roach says Antonio Margarito got off lightly with a one-year suspension and suspects the Mexican boxer may have used loaded hand wraps against other opponents besides Shane Mosley.
Roach, the trainer for Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, said he has studied the tapes of Margarito’s fights in 2008 and 2009 and sees things he doesn’t like.
“I wasn’t there, but when he fought (Kermit) Cintron the second time and when he fought (Miguel) Cotto something to me was different with the way he threw his punches,” Roach said Wednesday at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
Margarito was slapped with a one-year ban after being caught with a plaster-like substance in his gloves prior to a 2009 fight against Mosley. Margarito says his then trainer, Javier Capetillo, put the illegal substance in his gloves without his knowledge.
“After a fight what is the first thing a fighter wants to do? It is get the (expletive) gloves off as quickly as possible,” Roach said.
“Against Cintron he kept the gloves on the whole time didn’t take his gloves off until he got to the dressing room. So it makes me wonder.”
Roach said he “likes Margarito as a person” and has no hard evidence but he has his doubts when Margarito says he didn’t know that his trainer was slipping a hardened plaster-like substance into his boxing gloves.
“I was sadly surprised,” Roach said. “I studied his fight films for the last six or seven fights and seeing the difference in his actions it is evident he was loaded in some fights.” Margarito beat the favoured Cotto in 11 rounds in July 2008 just three months after knocking out Cintron in round six.
Roach said Wednesday that Margarito should have been given a lifetime ban.
“I feel the suspension for a year was a slap in the wrist and he should be suspended for life,” Roach said. “They gave him a year and he did it. It is like they put you in jail for a year and you are a free man. So you got to give him the opportunity.”
Margarito will step into the ring for the first time in the USA since he was caught using illegal hand wraps when he takes on Pacquiao November 13 at Cowboys Stadium.
Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38KOs) has asked officials to allow them to send an extra person from his camp into Margarito’s dressing room prior to the Dallas fight to observe the taping.

Some good things never last.
This is the reason why Freddie Roach will not prevent Manny Pacquiao from leaving boxing if and when he decides to retire after his title fight with Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Aware that politics has already gotten half of Pacquiao’s interest following his election as the lone representative in Congress of the province of Sarangani, Roach bared that he’ll counsel the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter to hang up his gloves if he's asked for his opinion on the matter.
Roach just expounded on his earlier remarks made in an interview by BBC World News that retirement may soon beckon the Filipino boxing icon.
And it’s no secret that politics is behind it.
And that’s exactly the reason why Roach wants Pacquiao to focus while in training, since this fight with the lumbering Mexican may be the last in his illustrious and colorful career that spans 15 years.
“His focus is the key," stressed Roach.
The remaining two weeks of training in the old confines of the Wild Card gym will be crucial, according to the famed trainer, to get Pacquiao in the best shape against the biggest opponent he’ll ever face in his career.
“The final three weeks will be two weeks of hard sparring at the Wild Card. Mostly what we have to work on is just focus. You know, Congress is gone for now. We don't have to deal with that right now because it's not here to deal with right now,"
he said.
But having known Pacquiao since he first entered the popular gym on Vine St. in Hollywood as an unknown fighter with rich potential, Roach believes they’ll still be able to overcome this latest – and perhaps final – adversity staring at them.
“I think that we will knock Margarito out along the way. I think that Margarito’s defense is terrible. He’s slow. I know that Margarito is supposed to be in great shape for this fight, but that's what he's supposed to be. It's a world title fight, so that's what I expect,"
Roach said.

Boxing: 'Absolutely, it is a mismatch,' said Dela Hoya
Straight from the mouth of the Golden Boy himself, Oscar Dela Hoya made this remark in response to a question thrown at him by Michael Marley of Examiner.com.
"Absolutely, it is a mismatch," Oscar said. "It's nothing personal between me and Margarito. We all know how that fight will go, we all know Manny's hands and feet are way too fast for Margarito."
Not that Dela Hoya belittles the capability of Antonio Margarito, but he believes his ward, Shane Mosley is more than capable to give Manny Pacquiao a lot of troubles than Margarito would.
Bob Arum had earlier mentioned he's lining up two fights for Pacquiao next year, and one of them will be either Floyd Mayweather or Shane Mosley.

Pacman set to earn $25M in battle against Margarito
CALIFORNIA, United States—World pound-for-pound champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao stands to earn as much as $25 million from his Nov. 13 fight against Mexican American Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito, according to his promoter Bob Arum.
“Manny is guaranteed $15 million for the fight, and including his share from the pay-per-view upside, he could make as much as $22 million to $25 million,” Arum said.
Arum, chief executive of Top Rank Promotions, predicts that Pacquiao vs Margarito will exceed the almost 1.2 million PPV sales generated by Pacquiao's fight with Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto last Nov. 14.
The top boxing impresario also said Margarito, who is guaranteed $3 million for his biggest pay check, could earn as much as $7 million to $8 million if the PPV sales hit 1.3 million or more, as expected.
PACQUIAO’S DISTRACTIONS
Arum said he was glad that Pacquiao, who has had a hard time keeping his training schedule, is finally focusing on his preparations for his stab at a record-extending eighth world title in as many weight classes.
He stressed that Pacquiao has to be at his best to beat the bigger and stronger Margarito.

Manny Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach fears his fighter is set to quit boxing to concentrate on politics.
Watch Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito - Five-weight world champion Pacquiao won a seat in the Philippine Congress in May and Roach said there are signs he has fallen out of love with the sport.
Pacquiao, 31, meets Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC light-middleweight crown in Dallas on 13 November."We are going to lose Manny Pacquiao to politics, for sure," Roach told BBC World Service.
"After the first couple of days of training Manny came up to me and said 'I miss my job', and I said 'you're at your job', and he said 'no, I miss Congress'."
Pacquiao, who is a national hero in the Philippines, represents the province of Sarangani and stated after being elected that he would have only one more fight.

A planned fight between the pair fell through in January when Pacquiao refused Mayweather's demands for random blood and urine tests.
And Roach added he was concerned by Pacquiao's preparation for the Margarito contest, saying they "haven't had the best training camp".
"I'm worried about the fight a little bit," said Roach, who was talking to BBC boxing commentator Mike Costello in the Philippine city of Baguio, where Pacquiao has been sparring with, among others, Britain's WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan.
"We're fighting against a big, strong guy who's going to be in great shape and we're a little behind schedule which is very unusual.
"I'm not sure if it's the size of the sparring partners that's giving him trouble or he's just not himself yet.
"He's getting better and better every day but it's coming a lot slower than usual.
"Usually Manny has his first sparring session and could fight 12 rounds the next day, I can't say that at this point in the camp.
"But we do have two hard weeks of sparring coming up before we start tapering off and slowing down and saving it for the fight."
As well as boxing and politics, Pacquiao has appeared in feature films, television shows and released a number of albums.
Mexico's Margarito, a former welterweight world champion, has won 38 of his 45 fights and has fought some of the biggest names of the era.
However, he was banned after illegal hand wraps were found in his gloves before a bout against Shane Mosley last January and has fought only once since then.

Roach Confident that Pacquiao Right Hand will Knockout Margarito!!!
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach is getting more confident about Manny Pacquiao’s chances against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito, now that the Filipino champ is getting his “good ol’ speed” back.
After dropping a few pounds, Monday’s sparring session with his partners saw Pacquiao display his speed.
Roach said Pacquiao will surely get his punches on Margarito, especially when he throws them in combinations.
But the American trainer believes Pacquiao’s potential knockout punch against Margarito will be his vastly improved right hand.
“I really believe it will be the right…it’s so strong now,” said the Hall of Famer coach.
Roach said the left-handed Pacquiao, with his south paw stance, puts the Filipino’s right hand closer to his opponent.
The American trainer has transformed the Filipino champion from a “one dimensional boxer," over-reliant on his powerful left hand, into a two-fisted fighter who can throw heavy bombs with his left and right hands.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum saw this two-fisted version of Pacquiao on Monday when the Filipino went through 10 rounds of sparring.
In one of those rounds, the hard-hitting Filipino busted the lip of training partner Glen Tapia to Arum’s approval.
'Old Pacquiao' will beat Margarito
Arum earlier said the "old Pacquiao" will defeat Margarito.
“The old Pacquiao would have no problem beating Antonio Margarito. He still has time to bring the old Pacquiao back when he is in LA,” he said in a report posted on Philboxing.com.
Pacquiao had 4 rounds with Tapia, another 4 round with British champion Amir Khan, and 2 rounds with Mexican Michael Medina.
The Filipino has a shed few pounds, after having trouble with the timing of his punches following his weight gain, hence, the improved speed.
His conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, said their present training is geared toward getting back Pacquiao’s agility.
“Manny's getting bigger, I think he's starting to be a bit worried he's getting too big, so right now, I'm gonna focus on his speed and get him faster,” said Ariza.
Pacquiao said more improvements are coming after they decided to lessen the plyometric routines in their training.
“Bibilis pa tayo kasi babawasan namin ‘yung plyometrics, ‘yung pampalaki ng katawan at lakas. So focus kami ngayon on speed (We’re going to get faster because we’re lessening the plyometrics, which adds bulk and power. Our focus now is speed),” said the WBO welterweight champion.
In a separate report by Philstar.com, Roach said Pacquiao will step into the ring no heavier than 150 pounds.
“Again, he’s (Margarito) bigger but size don’t win fights. Skill does,” he said. “That’s what we’re going to do – weigh in and climb the ring at almost the same weight. Manny’s not going in there heavier than 150 because it might slow him down a bit.”
Pacquiao and Margarito will fight it out on November 13 (November 14 in Manila) for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title.

After dropping a few pounds, Monday’s sparring session with his partners saw Pacquiao display his speed.
Roach said Pacquiao will surely get his punches on Margarito, especially when he throws them in combinations.
But the American trainer believes Pacquiao’s potential knockout punch against Margarito will be his vastly improved right hand.
“I really believe it will be the right…it’s so strong now,” said the Hall of Famer coach.
Roach said the left-handed Pacquiao, with his south paw stance, puts the Filipino’s right hand closer to his opponent.
The American trainer has transformed the Filipino champion from a “one dimensional boxer," over-reliant on his powerful left hand, into a two-fisted fighter who can throw heavy bombs with his left and right hands.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum saw this two-fisted version of Pacquiao on Monday when the Filipino went through 10 rounds of sparring.
In one of those rounds, the hard-hitting Filipino busted the lip of training partner Glen Tapia to Arum’s approval.
'Old Pacquiao' will beat Margarito
Arum earlier said the "old Pacquiao" will defeat Margarito.
“The old Pacquiao would have no problem beating Antonio Margarito. He still has time to bring the old Pacquiao back when he is in LA,” he said in a report posted on Philboxing.com.
Pacquiao had 4 rounds with Tapia, another 4 round with British champion Amir Khan, and 2 rounds with Mexican Michael Medina.
The Filipino has a shed few pounds, after having trouble with the timing of his punches following his weight gain, hence, the improved speed.
His conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, said their present training is geared toward getting back Pacquiao’s agility.
“Manny's getting bigger, I think he's starting to be a bit worried he's getting too big, so right now, I'm gonna focus on his speed and get him faster,” said Ariza.
Pacquiao said more improvements are coming after they decided to lessen the plyometric routines in their training.
“Bibilis pa tayo kasi babawasan namin ‘yung plyometrics, ‘yung pampalaki ng katawan at lakas. So focus kami ngayon on speed (We’re going to get faster because we’re lessening the plyometrics, which adds bulk and power. Our focus now is speed),” said the WBO welterweight champion.
In a separate report by Philstar.com, Roach said Pacquiao will step into the ring no heavier than 150 pounds.
“Again, he’s (Margarito) bigger but size don’t win fights. Skill does,” he said. “That’s what we’re going to do – weigh in and climb the ring at almost the same weight. Manny’s not going in there heavier than 150 because it might slow him down a bit.”
Pacquiao and Margarito will fight it out on November 13 (November 14 in Manila) for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title.

Robert Garcia, the man tasked to whip Margarito (38 wins, 6 losses, 27 knockouts) into his best form, has had the success in the two meetings he had against Pacquiao’s famed teacher, Freddie Roach. Garcia’s fighters — Steven Luevano and Margarito — emerged victorious against Roach’s wards Bernabe Concepcion of the Philippines and Robert Garcia.
"This is not only a challenge and a good opportunity for Margarito, but also, for myself. This is what I've been waiting for,” Garcia said in an interview with Fanhouse. “What a world champion fighter always looks for is that big fight, well, a trainer also wants that. And I'm here, and you know, it's six weeks away, and I'm doing everything possible to pull it out." said Garcia.
The 35-year-old Garcia, a former IBF super featherweight champion who retired from the sport with a 34-3, 25 KO win-loss card, is optimistic that Margarito will be able to mount a successful return on the boxing ring against the much smaller Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs).

The old Pacquiao would have no problem beating Antonio Margarito, Arum Said
Watch Pacquiao vs. Margarito. Boxing promoter Bob Arum assured this as 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao trained in an open-media invitation Monday afternoon.Arum is the founder and CEO of Top Rank Inc., which handles the promotion of Pacquiao's fights.
Arum, who arrived in the country Saturday morning to watch Pacquaio’s training that same afternoon, added that he himself doesn’t “interfere with where the fighter wants to train.”
He, however, stated that the Filipino boxing icon’s performance during Saturday's sparring session was “satisfactory.”
Amidst super typhoon Juan (International name Megi) hitting the northern parts of the country Monday, the Filipino champion went under a rigorous training in preparation for his World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight bout against Margarito at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, on November 13.
Pacquiao worked under the supervision of trainer Freddie Roach, conditioning coach Alex Ariza and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez.
The Filipino champ is reportedly scheduled to fly to the US on October 23. There, he will continue his training until his bout in Texas.
Defying gravity
Earlier, Arum warned Pacquiao that the Tijuana’s Tornado might be a threat, posing “very, very unique dangers,” to the Fighter of the Decade.
"He better step up his training because this guy (Margarito) poses very, very unique dangers," the Top Rank CEO affirmed.
"(Margarito) is in the best shape I have ever seen. He would be a big danger for any welterweight in the world,” he added.
Although, this doesn’t have to hamper Pacquiao, who will be at his heaviest of 151 pounds against Margarito, Arum also said earlier.
"Pacquiao is something special. No matter how big they are, Manny Pacquiao can handle them," Arum said.

“Margarito looks great and he’s very sharp,” Arum said by phone on Wednesday. “He’s training extremely hard, and I think his new trainer [Robert Garcia] is doing wonders [on him].”
The Hall of Fame promoter announced that he will leave for the Philippines on Thursday (Friday in Manila) to visit his prized fighter and to preside over Pacquiao’s October 18 media day in Baguio City, where the Filipino ring superstar is holding training camp.
When asked how Pacquiao’s training was going, Arum said, “I checked with them and they said that he’s doing well. I really don’t know, but I will see for myself.”
In Baguio City, Freddie Roach was reported to have asked Pacquiao to concentrate on his training by doing away with basketball and weekend trips to Manila that the trainer feels are interfering with Pacquiao’s training.
Reports by the local media indicate that Pacquiao has skipped his usual early-morning road work because of apparent tiredness from playing basketball the night before, and has left camp for two consecutive weekends to attend to functions in Manila.
Arum, chief executive of Top Rank Promotions, said that Pacquiao-Margarito promises to be an exciting fight between two proud and talented fighters known for their ferociousness in the ring.
He added that the fight will be a classic clash between Pacquiao’s vaunted speed and explosiveness against Margarito’s relentless attack and punching power.
Both boxers, who are under Top Rank’s promotional umbrella, will fight for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title.
Arum said that the fight has no rematch clause but Pacquiao, being the bigger fighter in the draw, would be given a rematch by Margarito in case of a big upset.
Bookmakers have pegged Pacquiao a 6-1 betting favorite, although boxing pundits consider the odds quite unrealistic.

Garcia, a fighter himself, is anticipating a big win for Margarito when the 5-foot-11 Mexican climbs the ring against the hard-hitting, fast-moving Filipino on Nov. 13.
Garcia said he’d never seen Margarito bigger and better than before.
“It was better than ever. Better than when he won his first title, better than when he beat (Miguel) Cotto. This is the time to beat Manny Pacquiao,” Garcia said.
Margarito has been training like an animal for this fight, and is now in Oxnard, California where he either pounds the road, chops wood or spars like it’s fight night.
The former super-welterweight champion is just as confident as his trainer.
“Freddie Roach is scared that we’re going to beat Manny Pacquiao,” said Margarito, who didn’t like Roach’s statements that he’ll get knocked out in seven or eight rounds.

In an interview with Fan House.com’s Elie Seckbach, Margarito also claimed that Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s boxing coach, is apprehensive about his ward’s upcoming fight.
“Freddie Roach is scared that we're gonna beat Manny Pacquiao,” said the Tijuana Tornado in Spanish, which was translated by fellow Mexican Robert Garcia.
The three-time world champion Margarito said he’s training hard and well for the fight.
He has no doubt things will go in his favor when he battles the 7-division world champion from the Philippines.
“It was better than ever,” Garcia said of his ward’s ongoing training. “Better than he won his first title, better than when he beat [Miguel] Cotto. This is the time to beat Manny Pacquiao.”

"I don’t count a win over fringe contender Roberto Garcia. You got to give me something better than that to show me that Margarito is the same fighter he once was. I don’t know what happened to him but his once impressive power is completely gone since the Mosley fight. That’s not good. Since Margarito still looks like a shadow of his former self, I think it’s wrong for him to have been picked as Pacquiao’s opponent. Why pick someone that isn’t looking good unless the object here is to find someone beatable for Pacquiao. If that’s the case, then a job well done by Pacquiao’s matchmakers."
"It’d much rather see Pacquiao in with someone that has an excellent chance of beating him like Timothy Bradley, Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez or James Kirkland. Put him in with them if you want to have Pacquiao fight fight a good junior middleweight, not someone that just recently fought his first fight at that weight in six long years in Margarito. This fight isn’t even going to be competitive and what Roach says is true, but anyone can point that out because it’s so obvious.
