HOLLYWOOD -- Who says Antonio Margarito has lost his mass appeal?
If the reception to his open public workout at La Gran Plaza Shopping Mall in Fort Worth is to be the basis, then the Mexican three-time world champion still boasts a strong fan base in Texas.
According to Examiner.com reports, more than a thousand fans showed up to watch Margarito train and then asked for his autograph as he mingled with the crowd.
It was a testimony to his drawing power, which many felt he lost when he was suspended from fighting for one year after hardening substances were found on his hand wraps when he fought and lost to Shane Mosley in 2009.
Earlier Sunday, Margarito graced a tamale contest in Dallas, a few kilometers away from Arlington, where his fight with Filipino pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is set at the Cowboys Stadium on November 13.
Obviously elated by the huge turnout, which included a mariachi band, Margarito again promised to pull off a surprise and deny Pacquiao his eighth world title in as many divisions.
Meanwhile, Philboxing's Dr. Ed De La Vega reported that Freddie Roach has designated his friend Billy Keane to watch Margarito's hand taping on fight night.
Roach wants to make sure that there would be no repeat of the Mosley incident this time.
