Pacquiao not concerned about size disadvantage vs. Margarito

ARLINGTON, Texas — By the time they step into the ring Saturday night for their super welterweight title showdown at Cowboys Stadium, Antonio Margarito could outweigh Manny Pacquiao by as much as 15-to-20 pounds.

At Friday's weigh-in, Margarito tipped the scales at 150 pounds, which is the catch weight the fighters agreed to. Pacquiao came in at 144.6 pounds, well under the limit, which caused a buzz among the news media covering the fight because of how low his weight was.

Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) is expected to re-hydrate to about 162-165 pounds by the start of the fight, which will be televised on HBO pay-per-view starting at 9 p.m. ET. Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) doesn't figure to come in at more than 147 pounds.

Pacquiao tells 60 Minutes: 'I've achieved my goals in boxing'

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao was regarded by American television newsmagazine “60 Minutes” as a “phenomenon,” given his unprecedented achievements in his sport.

The only seven-time world champion in 7 different weight divisions was profiled in the “60 Minutes” episode, which also featured US President Barack Obama.

Correspondent Bob Simon asked Pacquiao whom he thinks is the greatest pugilist ever.

The boxer-congressman paused then asked, “Including me?”

When told that he was included in the choices, Pacquiao immediately answered, “Of course, me,” and flashed a beaming smile.

The reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) king will aim to win his record 8th title at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

He will face Mexican Antonio Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title.

Top Rank, Inc. CEO Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach also talked about Pacquiao’s greatness.

Arum said he thinks Pacquiao is the best boxer he has ever seen even if he has promoted 2 fights for boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who is called “The Greatest.”

“Because Muhammad Ali was essentially a one-handed fighter,” Arum reasoned. “Manny Pacquiao really shocks these fighters because he hits equally hard from the left side and the right side.”

Roach added that Pacquiao is simply “one-of-a-kind.”

“I never saw somebody with so much explosion on a punch. Bang, bang, bang. Bang, just like a gun firing off. I never saw that in my life. And I've been with a lot of good fighters,” Roach related upon seeing Pacquiao in the ring for the first time.

Politics getting in the way?

Roach, however, is wary that Pacquiao could lose to Margarito because of the distraction of politics.

“I’ve had anxiety attacks over this. I’m worried about it. I’m walking around at 2:00 in the morning,” the renowned trainer said. “And something is not right and we are not preparing the way we should for this fight.”

Pacquiao earlier told ABS-CBN News that he has reached his 100% condition.

Meantime, he told “60 Minutes” more about his political aspirations.

“I already achieve my goals in boxing, my dreams in boxing. And what I want to achieve more is in public service, you know. I wanna be a champion there,” he said.

When asked if he thinks that he might be the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pacquiao refused to comment.

“It’s hard to have a comment right now because it’s that far away,” the Saragani Province congressman stated. – With a report from CBS News' "60 Minutes"

Opposing Views: Pacquiao vs. Margarito Fight: Truly Good vs. Evil

Opinion by Michael Flood McNulty
(1 Day Ago) in Sports / Manny Pacquiao

Boxing is a shady game. Always has been, always will be. From back-room deals to fixed fights, it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad.

But come Nov. 13 in Dallas, when Filipino Manny Pacquiao faces Mexican Antonio Margarito in front of (begin Michael Buffer voice) thousands of fans in attendance and millions watching around the world (end Buffer voice), the lines have never been more clear.

If you like guys who make it out of poverty and overcome adversity their entire life -- yet maintain an extraordinary sense of humility and give a tremendous amount back -- you'll root for Manny Pacquaio.

If you like guys who cheat and deceive, you'll root for Antonio Margarito.

What's Next For Boxer Manny Pacquiao?

Bob Simon profiles boxing sensation Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, who has won world championships in seven different weight divisions and is going for an eight title soon. But will his new job as a Philippine politician hurt his career?

Manny Pacquiao v Antonio Margarito – don't believe the hype

Some say Manny Pacquiao's title fight against the disgraced Antonio Margarito is tough to call. But if the challenger wins it will be the shock of the year.

What a lot of hot air has enveloped Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito ahead of their allegedly "light-middleweight" title fight in Texas on Saturday.

Some smart writers have totally bought into "stories" that Congressman Pacquiao is said to be too wrapped up in his political duties and trained poorly in the Philippines before going to the Wild Card in LA. Really? Now, of course, the fight is no longer the one-sided smashing of a seasoned pro (six defeats in 45 fights, remember) but an even-money affair, so roll up, roll up.

Pause for a minute: 32-year-old Margarito is a legitimate opponent; he did, after all, do a number on Miguel Cotto (although who knows how legal his gloves were that night). He also had to hold off an ambitious Roberto García over 10 rounds in May.

But he has lost to the following: way back in 1994 to Tijuana tumbler Victor Lozoya, who was coming off a kayo loss and went on to lose to nine other no-names; Larry Dixon (ditto), who lost three more and quit boxing in 1998; Rodney Jones, a decent fighter whose last fight was three years ago, losing to Cory Spinks over 12 rounds for the IBF light-middle title; Daniel Santos (on cuts); Paul Williams three years ago at welterweight; and, most significantly, to Shane Mosley in his last real test.

In January 2009 – that's 22 months ago – Mosley demolished Margarito with the last dregs of his once phenomenal hand speed and movement – and nobody moves more quickly or quirkily than the Pacman.

But the seers say he is distracted, off his game, complacent. Pacquiao has lived with chaos and hardship since he was an urchin on the streets of General Santos City, juggling boxing with survival. He has an entourage bigger than the president. He lets some of them sleep at the foot of his bed. And he fits all of that in around the toughest training regime in boxing. A couple of blisters from wearing dress shoes to fancy functions in Manila a few weeks ago are not going to worry him in a mere fist fight.

What still worries Pacman's coach, Freddie Roach, apparently, is the prospect of Margarito sneaking some help into his gloves. "You have fucking rocks in your hand, you know it," he told BoxingScene.com. "Against Santos and Williams and so forth, he doesn't look like he's that big a puncher. Against [Kermit] Cintron [whom he cut in half with a vicious body shot] and Cotto, something was different."

So, presuming it's clean, Pacquiao should do a number on Margarito – who I still don't think should be anywhere near a boxing ring after being caught with loaded gloves moments before the Mosley fight, and then was banned for only a year.

Similarly, though, it is a liberty that Pacquiao should be allowed to make this fight at three pounds inside the light-middleweight limit of 154lbs. After the weigh-in, Margarito will add at least half a stone; I doubt it will do him much good. If Margarito wins, it will be the shock of the year – but at least the fight writers who fell for the hype will be able to say I told you so.

Rumour mill cranks into gear

The countdown to Haye-Harrison got off to a cracking start on the rumour mill. Firstly, there was 39-year-old American southpaw Tony Thompson knocking the champion over in the gym (unsubstantiated, denied, probably nonsense); then there was Audley sparking four sparring partners in one session (no comment from the challenger, no witnesses, smiles from Haye).

And Ian McNeilly of Boxrec.com has given life to this one. If Adam Smith is vacating the microphone to head up Sky's negotiations with the major promoters, it will, as McNeilly suggests, take some neat diplomacy for a guy who up to now has been a genial ringside frontman to be firm with Frank Warren, Barry Hearn, Frank Maloney, Ricky Hatton and Haye, their main promotional partners. Good luck, Adam.

I had a chat with Haye on his way to Soccer AM on Saturday morning (what a jolly old lads' zoo that programme is), and he confirmed that everyone from Roy Jones Jr to Bernard Hopkins had been on the phone asking for a title shot.

He reckons the rematch clause Nikolai Valuev had with him has lapsed – for which we should all be grateful – and he doubts the Uzbekistani Ruslan Chagaev will pass a health test for their mandatory, slated for February or March.

Believe it or not, that's when Roy Jones might be fighting the Prizefighter winner Michael Sprott. Won't be queueing for that one.

Lest we forget, by the way, Sprott was boxing the ears off Audley Harrison in April before being knocked out by a desperate left hook. It's 14 years since Sprott, now 35, started out with the late Terry Lawless – and more than three years since he kayoed Audley in their first fight. Some career.

Sprott is off to Germany soon to help Wladimir Klitschko get ready for Dereck Chisora on 11 December – providing Delboy gets an adjournment from the police on an assault charge this week.

Margarito draws thousands of fans during public workout

HOLLYWOOD -- Who says Antonio Margarito has lost his mass appeal?

If the reception to his open public workout at La Gran Plaza Shopping Mall in Fort Worth is to be the basis, then the Mexican three-time world champion still boasts a strong fan base in Texas.

According to Examiner.com reports, more than a thousand fans showed up to watch Margarito train and then asked for his autograph as he mingled with the crowd.

It was a testimony to his drawing power, which many felt he lost when he was suspended from fighting for one year after hardening substances were found on his hand wraps when he fought and lost to Shane Mosley in 2009.

Earlier Sunday, Margarito graced a tamale contest in Dallas, a few kilometers away from Arlington, where his fight with Filipino pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is set at the Cowboys Stadium on November 13.

Obviously elated by the huge turnout, which included a mariachi band, Margarito again promised to pull off a surprise and deny Pacquiao his eighth world title in as many divisions.

Meanwhile, Philboxing's Dr. Ed De La Vega reported that Freddie Roach has designated his friend Billy Keane to watch Margarito's hand taping on fight night.

Roach wants to make sure that there would be no repeat of the Mosley incident this time.

'Floyd is Ducking Pacquiao' — Roach

MANILA, Philippines — With the much anticipated November 13 showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito just around the corner, news of the Filipino seven-division champion’s future bout against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Jr. refuses to die down in the loop.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach, who has been responsible for making Pacquiao the well-rounded fighter that he is right now, says that the fight between two of the best boxers today — that is, Pacquiao and Mayweather — might not materialize in the future, owing to the American’s reluctance to face top boxers of his class.

“I don’t think it (Pacquiao-Mayweather, Jr. fight) will ever happen; it will be one of those fights we’re never going to see,” Roach said in a recent interview with Graham Bensinger of Yahoo! Sports.

Months of negotiations between Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, who represented Mayweather, fell off after disputes over random drug testing demands were not settled initially.

Pacquiao eventually agreed to undergo the said tests during the second wave of talks, but the deal seemingly took a wrong turn for the worse when Mayweather announced that he’ll be taking the rest of the year off from boxing as he faces a legal battle in the court. (see also: “More Charges Pressed Against Mayweather, Jr.”)

The undefeated American boxer, who carries a 41-0 professional slate that includes 25 victories via knockouts, is now facing eight charges — two felony coercion and one felony robbery charge along with one misdemeanor domestic battery and three misdemeanor harassment charges —which might translate to more than 30 years in prison if convicted, in relation to his alleged beating of former girlfriend Josie Harris last September.

Roach denied allegations hurled by Mayweather’s camp that no negotiations ever took place to pit him and Pacquiao, claiming that they (Pacquiao’s camp) even agreed to go up the ring first and let Mayweather come in second.

“It would have happened by now. With all that money — $40-million guarantee to both sides plus pay-per-view — come on how can you turn that down?” Roach added. “Boxing’s a sport, but it’s a business also.”

“The world knows Floyd is ducking Manny Pacquiao at this point — I think that’s the bottom line,” Roach affirms. “I think Floyd is contented on fighting mediocre fighters, opponents with styles he knows he can beat.”

HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg, meanwhile, remains optimistic on the chances of putting up the megabuck showdown between the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighters.

"We had two attempts at Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao and clearly, that was a fight that, if it could have been made, would have hit mainstream America hard. I mean, we were right on the cusp of something really special happening, and I'll tell you that I'm not giving up on it," Greenburg reveals.

However, Greenburg admits that he remains puzzled as to why Mayweather decided to take a rest from boxing at such a very opportune time.

“To this day, I don’t know why he wanted to take some time off,” says Greenburg, who Arum notes as the one who was directly negotiating with Mayweather for the fight with Pacquiao.

“Both times, the fight was very close to being made. And, the second time around, all that I can say is that you would have to ask Floyd Mayweather, Jr. why the fight wasn’t made,” Greenburg tells, as quoted by Satterfield. To this day, I really don’t know why he decided that he didn’t want to fight anymore in the fall.”

Still, Greenburg, just like all the other boxing fans all over the world, is keeping his fingers crossed that they could finalize the deal that will make the decade’s most explosive boxing event a reality.

“I have to remain optimistic… if we can clear those hurdles, I’m pretty optimistic about that fight happening if we get a shot at making it again,” Greenburg says.

Pacquiao-Margarito 24/7---Episode Three Summary

In the conference call this week to hype the Nov. 13 showdown in Dallas, it sounded to me like perhaps Antonio Margarito's confidence isn't soaring, that maybe he knows in his gut that Manny Pacquiao is on a higher tier than him at this point of his career. But then I tuned in to the third installment of HBO's 24/7, Pacquiao-Margarito edition, and I (briefly) considered the possibility that Pacman's speed of hand and foot won't be an overwhelming edge, that maybe the Mexican could pull an immense upset.

Well done, HBO.

LOL.

We see Pacquiao working against Ray Beltran, David Rodela, Rashad Holloway and Willie Price, for a total of 12 rounds, and Freddie Roach liked what he saw. Holloway had sparred with Margarito, before his fight with Shane Mosley. In one sparring session, a punch to the right eye, which broke his orbital bone. He feared his career would be over. After the hand wrap scandal, Holloway wondered if perhaps Margarito was using an illegal aid in sparring. "I'll hurt Pacquiao as if I'm wearing plaster but there won't be anything in the wraps," Margarito said, with a slight grin.

A parade of lefties is brought in to spar with Margarito. One, Cleotis Pendarvis, is a decent mimic of Manny. But Margarito, it seems, won't look to conventional wisdom in fighting a lefty. He'll swarm Manny, make him back up, he says.

He doesn't buy that Manny is distracted, and says that's all excuses.

We see Pacman on the Jimmy Kimmel show, and then, two nights later, Manny's wife Jinkee arrives.

In Oxnard, we see that local youth flock to Robert Garcia's gym. He likes it, likes to help them stay away from the streets. Brandon Rios, who will fight on the Nov. 13th undercard, was a youth headed the wrong way, in Kansas, and he flew straight when he met Garcia in 2004.

Pacman then says he is properly conditioned, that he is ready to beef. "He's in shape but he's not in Manny Pacquiao shape," says fitness trainer Alex Ariza. He pegs Manny at about 80%.

Manny says he will stay at 147-148, rather than the 153 he was at for Joshua Clottey, to keep up his speed. The team thinks Margarito might outweigh Manny by as much as 20 pounds on fight night, but feel speed will be the differentiator. "I thought this would be a tough fight. I don't think so any more," says Freddie Roach.

"I have no doubt Margarito is going to get a late round stoppage," Garcia says.

Margarito, looking like he has not an ounce of fat to burn, weighs 154 pounds a few days he is to leave for Texas. Oh yes, the catchweight is in the contract for a reason, people. That last couple of pounds will be a b-tch.

10-15 solons seek permission to watch Pacquiao fight

MANILA, Philippines - At least 10-15 congressmen have sought permission from House Speaker Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte Jr. to skip sessions by the end of the week to attend the much awaited November 13 match between People's Champ Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito of Mexico.

Belmonte said 10-15 members of the House of Representatives have sought travel authority for the upcoming megabout. He said more congressmen may apply for travel authority in the run up to the fight.

“Baka madagdagan pa with requests filed this week," he said, noting that most of the congressmen may leave by Thursday.

The Speaker earlier said he will allow congressmen to watch the fight of their colleague as long as they pay for it out of their own pockets. Pacquiao is the congressional representative of Sarangani.

Earlier news reports said as many as 54 congressmen are planning to watch the fight.

The fight comes on the 2nd week of November, a week after Congress resumes session following a 3-week break for All Saints’ Day.
